Garden Notes...
The cold weather veg is going in the ground TODAY!!! The forecast is for a week of daily highs over 5 degrees, and evening temps above freezing, so we should be safe - for now we are adding radishes, a variety of lettuces, and carrots. Other cool weather veg which you can safely add over the next few weeks include spinach, onions and garlic, cauliflower and peas. It's not a bad idea however to mulch around plants going in this early in the season, just to protect them against cooler nights...
My friend Marty recently passed on a great book: "The Quebec Gardener", by Trevor Cole. It's about 30 years old, but not much as changed since then, and the Edible Garden section at the end of the book is a great guide for what can be successfully planted at different points throughout the season. It is available new on Amazon, but there are some copies on www.abebooks.com starting at $4.
